SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (TCD) — Police have arrested a mother this week in connection with the death of her 1-year-old daughter, who was pulled from a pond.
On Thursday, May 11, the Sandy Springs Police Department responded to 2 Concourse Parkway to a report of a disturbance. At the scene, police made contact with Asia Calabrese-Lewis, and she was allegedly “having some type of episode.”
When the child’s father arrived and asked about the girl’s whereabouts, Calabrese-Lewis reportedly said the “baby was deceased in a pool.”
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, authorities issued a missing child alert, and a search for the child ensued. A 911 caller reportedly told police the child was near the area, and Sandy Springs Police and Fire Department located the victim, Nirvana Oliver, in a pond. Officials performed lifesaving measures, but ultimately, the child was transported to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta, where she was pronounced deceased.
Investigators did not disclose how the victim got into the pond, but Sgt. Matthew McGinnis told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they “do not think it is accidental at this time.”
Autopsy results are pending to see if the girl died due to drowning or some other cause.
Police arrested Calabrese-Lewis, and she was booked into the Fulton County Jail on charges of cruelty to children and felony murder.
